Is Your Business Website Secure?

It is kind of scary being a computer user in today’s world.  We are constantly hearing about people using the internet to hack into programs, other people’s computers, and business websites.  Computer viruses are a big issue as are computer scams, but legitimate e-commerce owners have one major thing they must always be on the lookout for: computer hackers.  Hackers can gain access to your online business and breach sensitive data.  If they are successful and cause enough damage, you may find that you have to shut your e-commerce site down for good.  While you may have all of the best safety features in place, your site may still not be as secure as you think.  Sit down and consider the following questions while you determine just how secure your site is.

  • What kind of information do you need to secure on your e-commerce website?

Any type of confidential information – such as payroll information or customer records – needs to be properly protected if it is attached to your e-commerce website.  Additionally, you need to make sure that you have measures in place to protect your company’s reputation in the event of a hacking.

  • What other risks are your data under?

Hacking is the largest risk, but you also have to take into consideration malicious software and viruses that can sneak in undetected.  Internal theft is another thing to think about as well as physical threats to your entire system and the dedicated servers it is hosted on.

  • Who is responsible for the security of your e-commerce site?

It is a good idea to have an experienced system administrator on your staff that is knowledgeable in all of the current forms of cyber attack.  They will be able to put into place the proper security precautions to protect your website and the information it contains as good as humanly possible.

  • What are you currently doing or plan to do about your website’s security?

If you have not already done so, you need to install the proper security programs and other technology to your e-commerce website.  You also need to train your employees in the right security measures and ensure that they understand the risks involved by not following them.

It is important that you keep your website secure at all times. It is a full-time operation.  By following some basic preventative measures you can secure your site in no time and decrease the likelihood of becoming a victim of cyber crime.  Invest in physical security systems to protect your server at all times and make sure you practice daily backups of the system.  Keep your back-up disks off of the premises in the event of a disaster.  Assign only the rights that your employees need based on their role in the organization to reduce sabotage.  Be aware of how your staff is acting and make sure you train them continuously on their role when it comes to company security and enforce the consequences of anyone who is not compliant.  Finally, make sure you have every program in place to protect your website as it is a large part of your day to day operations.
